Event: The Great American Pitchfest

gapIf you’re looking for something to do in two weeks, you can’t overlook The Great American Pitchfest.

But I’m not talking about the Pitchfest itself. Personally, I’ve never done the pitching portion of the conference. I’ve been told that it is a good way to practice pitching to professionals, but you can also practice on your friends and save several hundred dollars. Some people swear by pitchfests, but I feel like there are probably more effective ways to invest in your screenwriting career.

That said, if you’re in the area (or anywhere within a hundred miles) you have to register and show up for the Free Classes.

Free Screenwriting Classes Tomorrow at GAPF

Don’t have plans tomorrow? You do now.

The Great American Pitchfest is happening this weekend in Burbank. Screenwriters from all around the country come to LA for this event which provides the opportunity to pitch scripts to producers, agents, and managers who are all looking for new material.

I’ve personally never participated in the pitchfest portion of the conference on Sunday — the part in which you pay lots of money to spend two minutes trying to get some bored exec to buy your script. The cost/benefit ratio has never made enough enough sense to me to invest, though apparently people get new representation or sell a script every year.

The part of this conference that is exciting to me is Saturday — a full day of free classes on writing technique, pitching methods, and networking. I attended this free day last year and came away with some valuable insights as well as a few new contacts.
